At St George’s Village, healthy ageing is centred around staying active, building meaningful connections, and enjoying life together as a community. One of the wonderful ways this comes to life each week is through our Walking Club and exercise class, led by registered Biokineticist, Maritsa Van Den Heever.
Since its launch in September 2025, the weekly exercise and walking class has grown into a much-loved community activity within the village. Held every Friday from 09:00 to 10:00 — with occasional Thursday sessions as well — the class offers residents a relaxed and enjoyable way to keep moving while spending time together.
From the very beginning, the class was warmly received and continues to bring together a small but enthusiastic group of residents who look forward to their weekly sessions. Filled with plenty of laughs, conversation, and encouragement, the atmosphere is welcoming, supportive, and suited to all fitness levels.
The class combines gentle exercise with walking, creating a balanced routine focused on mobility, movement, and overall wellbeing. Whether residents are looking to maintain flexibility, improve balance, stay socially connected, or simply enjoy light activity in good company, everyone is encouraged to participate at their own pace.
One of the most special parts of the Walking Club has been the friendships that have developed along the way. After each session, members often sit down together for a cup of coffee or something to drink — a lovely opportunity to relax, chat, and enjoy each other’s company after exercising.
Leading the classes is Maritsa Van Den Heever, a passionate registered Biokineticist with a special interest in movement, rehabilitation, and healthy ageing. With experience working with orthopaedic injuries, chronic conditions, and the geriatric community, Maritsa is deeply passionate about helping people improve their quality of life through movement and health promotion.
Maritsa is also the author of this month’s featured blog, Keeping Mobile: A Simple Step Towards Healthy Ageing, where she shares valuable insights into the importance of staying active through retirement and the many benefits that regular walking can bring to both body and mind.
The positive feedback around the Walking Club continues to grow, and it has become a meaningful part of life at St George’s Village — bringing together movement, friendship, and community in a simple but impactful way.
